CHAPTER NINE - YOU CAN'T GET THERE FROM HERE
As I write this, I am being driven by the presupposition that it will be the final Chapter in PART ONE: TWO YEARS IN A BODY/BRAIN MINDSET. Yet, as I do so, I am also being compelled to go back to the first gathering I ever attended with this man I have mentioned before, Mr. J. Krishnamurti.
I should forewarn you that I have been told by some people very close to me that their perception of my perception of this man as some kind of omnsicient being, has caused them to all but shut themselves off from wanting to have anything to do with me. Their conclusion is that a) my obsession with him borders on the fanatical -- or b) at best, it's not unlike some people's belief in some form of fumdamentalist religion. Meaning that they believe my interpretation of what the man had to say is being used by me to hide behind all this stuff you're reading - like some fundamentalist Christians and/or Moslems use their belief systems to commit all manner of atrocities. Bottom line: It's my way of avoiding the facts of life.
Sometimes we have to take chances like that in life - even at the possible cost of cutting oneself off from a loved one. This is one of those times. Principally because even those who would like to believe that Krishnamurti was some kind of omniscient being have missed the most basic point of what he had to say. Which is this:
There is no such thing as an omniscient human being. There never has been such a being - and there never will be such a being. Why? Because the existence of such a being is like saying the wonderful Escher drawing above can be actualized in real life.
Escher's drawings were graphic constructs created by way of a language called "Mathematics". Problem is all languages - including Mathematics - have their limitations. They are all constrained by the limitations of the instrument that created them - THOUGHT! And that's what the lifeworks of Krishnamurti and later David Bohm were all about: They showed - over and over again - why one can't use the process we call "thinking" to get to Truth. Note the capital "T". Now let me put the entire word in caps .... TRUTH?! What's that?
It's WHAT IS - not what we THINK IS - but what actually IS. And folks, the truth IS - YOU CAN'T GET THERE FROM HERE! - meaning by way of words - or pictures - although both have been tried since our species first came up with the concept of attempting to nail down "WHAT IS"- like it's some sort of "thing"; and they futilely continue to try. The most recent attempt (by Science) was chronicled in the headlines that claimed that some guys have found the basic particle of Life, itself . Nonsense! Life is not made of "particles". At the other end of the spectrum of thought, we have what is perhaps one of the most ancient attempts at graphically representing WHAT IS - the famous symbol for the TAO:
(NOTE: Some say it is the role of the artist to point to the ineffable.
1. Incapable of being expressed; indescribable or unutterable
From that POV one might perhaps consider Krishnamurti and David Bohm as artists... but by no means "all knowing"... which is silly. David B. even said in one of his conversations with me that Science "is primarily a perceptual enterprise" ... although knowledge may be gained from it. )
....Got it, so far? ... And now, to where it all began - for me. I also have a documentation of that.
It was during a series of Krishnamurti gatherings that I attended and also videotaped. No small feat back then - in 1970. I did it with a rudimentary portable TV camera I managed to get my hands on. The videotaped results of those 8 gatherings were lost for more than 25 years. However they were later found and they are now known as "The Malibu Tapes".
(NOTE: What's left of them is (are?) available for purchase through various agencies. But know also, that the first two gatherings remain only in audio format.)
What follows is excerpted from that series of tapes. I edited it this way a year or so ago, to act as an Introduction to an autobiographical essay. It also seems to work as a good starting point for what I'm relating to you right now. The piece ends rather abruptly - but that's intentional... In "Show Biz" lingo, it's called "a tease" . The last words you'll hear are the name of a famous entertainer who was directly responsible for my meeting Krishnamurti... no kidding. So we'll pick up our story with how that famous entertainer was involved, in the next installment of this last chapter of Part One.
Some of you may THINK this is cheating - that is, my segmenting the last chapter in installments... However, there's a point to that too. But I'm getting ahead of myself.... whatever that means ....
One last very important point... The guy who is identified as "ME" in the middle of this clip is really ME! Those of you who knew me even back in '70 - are also no doubt aware of one of my most visible attributes - the ever-increasing area of baldness in the back of my head. Mercifully, the baldness seems to have stopped - around last Thursday. But sticking with the point of all this... that may not be what actually IS...but what I THINK IS. And I'd love to BELIEVE IS ... Nevertheless....
Here's how it all started:
